In this guide, I'm going to reveal how I cut the cord at my home and have saved a TON of money doing it. If you are still paying a bunch of money for TV / Movies, you need to read this ASAP!
I cut the cord years ago and have been loving it ever since.
I don’t pay much, but I have what feels like unlimited access to movies, TV shows, music, and gaming. It’s absolutely mind blowing how much entertainment my family and I have for so little money.
I get asked about this all the time from friends and family that come to the house or simply someone who has heard about my setup.
If you haven’t already, it’s time to cut the cord. There is very little reason to keep your cable TV or satellite package anymore.
The internet has paved the way for affordable high quality entertainment.
I’m going to breakdown exactly how I do it and how you can do it as well, but first I’m going to tell you why you should do this and now!
Comcast sucks! Yes I’m talking to you Comcast. (I hope your reading)
Comcast is terrible because they are a monopoly. They have very little competition so they can basically do what they wish and get away with it because we can’t go anywhere else. At least not very easily.
Comcast is not the only one, this is ALL the big internet and TV providers, but I’m picking on Comcast, because they are by far the biggest provider.
You’re service is horrible, your support is horrible, your prices are horrible!
Cable TV and satellite TV are all way overpriced and very low quality. Most people are paying way too much for entertainment.
WHAT I USE AND HOW MUCH IT COSTS
Here’s my exact monthly setup for nearly unlimited entertainment for my wonderful family of 6 on the cheap!
- Internet $50 Per Month
- Netflix - Movies & TV - $10 Per month
- Spotify - Music - $10 Per Month
- Movie Pass - Unlimited Movie Theater Movies for 2 - $20 per month
Unlimited Entertainment -> Movies, TV Shows, and Music for $90 per month!
I pay $90 a month for nearly unlimited entertainment and internet. To be honest, I could probably go with a cheaper internet plan and get this down $75 per month, but we use the Internet A LOT and I like my fast download speeds!
I also use a bunch of free services as well:
- Steam - Tons of free and cheap PC games
- Blizzard - Great free and cheap PC games
- Apple Appstore - Tons of free games and entertainment
- Library - Free books! What’s not to love about that?
HOW YOU CAN CUT THE CABLE AND SAVE SOME MONEY
You can probably save a ton of money by cancelling your cable or satellite TV and get much better entertainment. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how you can do it.
STEP 1 - BUY INTERNET IF YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE IT
You probably already have internet and it’s probably already good enough to stream movies and TV. If so, move on to step 2.
If not, here is what you need to do.
Find your local internet providers and determine which one has the best reviews and prices. You will need about 10Mbps or more to stream HD movies.
This may cost $30 - $50 per month depending on the internet provider you go with.
STEP 2 - GET A WIRELESS INTERNET ROUTER
A lot of internet providers now provide wireless routers when you sign up. If they do, great, you’re almost ready. Write down the name of the wireless network and the password. You’ll need it later.
If you don’t have one or would just prefer your own, I would go with a Google WIFI. I have one and love it. It works well and is easy to manage.
STEP 3 - MAKE THAT TV SMART
Most TV’s are smart now. That simply means that they can connect to WIFI and have apps on them to access things like Netflix.
Check out your TV and see if it can connect to WIFI. If it does, use the wireless name and password to connect. Once you are connected then you can download the Netflix app.
Now, if you don’t have a smart TV, you can make it smart.
My favorite device for doing this is the Apple TV generation 4. That’s what we use and love.
There are other even more affordable options you can check out like:
- AMAZON FIRE TV
Any of these could work. Get your favorite and unbox it.
Connect it to your TV with the HDMI cable it comes with. Connect it to your network with the wireless network name and password you wrote down earlier.
Boom! You’re TV is now smart. It’s that easy.
Now you can download apps for anything you want to watch on your TV.
As I said earlier, I highly suggest starting with Netflix and then expanding later if you want more options.
STEP 4 - SIGNING UP FOR NETFLIX
There are a lot of streaming options out there, but one of the best bang for your bucks is Netflix. If you’re a brand new cord cutter, Netflix is a great starting point that you can add on to later with other streaming options if you wish.
Open up the app on your TV and follow the simple instructions. Enter your email, create a password, and enter your credit card info.
You’re watching thousands of movies and TV shows without the huge costs!
STEP 5 - HOW TO GET LOCAL TV FOR FREE
This one depends on your location. If you are within 25 miles or so of a city with local TV service, you can get those channels for free.
These can provide tons of free access to local news and sports if you are into those types of things.
All you need is a powered digital antenna for your TV. My favorite is the Mohu Digital TV Antenna.
These are not like those old rabbit ear antennas from your childhood. These are sleek and can be hidden behind the TV.
Once plugged into a power outlet and TV, you will be able to pull in all those local TV channels for the low price of free!
STEP 6 - RELAX AND ENJOY YOUR SAVINGS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Depending on what internet plan you went with, you could be enjoying tons of entertainment and internet for less than $50 bucks per month. That blows away the terrible quality and pricing of cable TV!
This is a simple and fun way to take back a bit of your money from greedy companies like Comcast.
Sit back and enjoy the savings and entertainment!
