My Secrets For How to Be Financially Happy

When I was younger I was VERY materialistic.

I wanted the “finer” things in life.

I was chasing that so called “American Dream.” The big house, the fancy cars, and all the other things that went along with it.

I did get some of those things, but I usually got them through debt.

I remember getting a my Mercedes Benz and being so excited. That excitement didn’t last long. Before long, it was just another thing I owned the required lots of maintenance and lots of money for debt payments.

My problem was that I wasn’t financially content. I wasn’t content with my current situation period. Once I got one new thing I wanted, I was looking for the next big thing. It’s an endless cycle that leaves you stressed, unfulfilled, and unhappy.

Contentment is not a money issue. You can have hardly any money or millions and still not be content. Even if you’re rich you can still be chasing the next big thing just out of your reach.

Not being content is a psychological problem. It’s the desire for more than you have and never having enough. Until you can overcome the desire for more and be truly content you will never be truly happy in life.

Obstacles to Financial Contentment

Our society does not make it easy to be financially content. In fact, our society is trying to create financial discontent in us every day.

Big brands are using our desire for status to push us into buying their latest products. It amazes me how many people will spend $1,000 on a new phone when it barely does more than their existing phone simply because it is “latest and greatest” toy.

Financial companies piggy back off of big brands ability to create desire for higher status by selling us money.

They loan us money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need and then charge us massive amounts of interest and fees.

The entertainment industry shoves fake happiness down our throats with financial idols such as the Kardashians and rap singers.

They attempt to make this the norm. Extravagant lifestyles that no-one needs or should even want.

All of these big businesses make millions by creating discontentment in our lives. They profit off of our suffering. They profit off of making us financially discontent.

How to Beat Financial Discontentment

Thankfully, financial discontentment can be overcome.

I’ve worked hard to eliminate discontent and learn to be content with my life. This has led to much greater happiness and fulfillment in my life and you can do it too.

Here’s what I’ve done to help beat the onslaught of materialism in my own life. Try these out in your life and I’m sure you’ll feel a huge difference.

The number one thing I’ve done to fight discontentment is blocking out advertisements as much as I can in my own life.

This is to fight the constant barrage of ads from big bands trying to create discontent in our lives.

I’ve cut cable and switched to Netflix. No more Kardashian style shows and fake lifestyles. Not only does it save a ton of money, but it also eliminates all of those advertisements from being played constantly in my home.

I now use Spotify to listen to music without ads being played constantly between songs. I also use AdBlocker in my web browser to block ads while using the internet.

All of this helps to eliminate the barrage of big brand advertisements.

Outside of blocking out the big brands I also work hard to tell myself that what I have is enough for me. It’s great to have goals, but chasing lots of materialistic things is recipe for discontentment and unhappiness.

I have a great home, I don’t need a bigger one. I have a great car, I don’t need a new one until it’s about dead. I have a phone that already works great, I don’t need a new one.

It’s hard initially to make the switch, but once you do it feels amazing to be content with what you have.
