We live in an amazing time. Smartphones and computers make it so easy to do things in minutes that would have taken hours or even days long ago. 10 years ago if I wanted to pay my bills I had to sit down at a desk with the bill, write a check, write out the addresses on an envelope, stamp it, and put it in the mailbox.
That was for 1 bill! Imagine doing 10 of those every month! What a waste of time...
Today I do nothing. I'm not exaggerating. As I sit hear typing this it is the 1st of the month. Earlier this morning I got an email saying payments had been sent to each of my payees.
I did nothing this morning! My bills are automatically taken care of through an automated process I put in place years ago.
It is amazing! To this day I still get a little excited seeing that email that all of my bills were paid and I did nothing. No more late payments and even more important no more wasted time!
So how do I do this? You guessed it, apps!
Between apps on my smartphone and web apps we live in golden age where so many things can be automated, eliminated hours and even days of wasted time from our lives, giving us more free time to do the things we love.
I'm going to give you a list of 7 awesome apps that automate your entire money system. I could list for hours all the great apps out there that can help you with your money, but these seven alone could automate your money and are a great starting point.
Best of all is that all of these apps can be used on your smartphone allowing you to access you financial picture from anywhere and can be completely automated!
I'm also providing a FREE Tools List PDF you can grab with all the tools from this article. You can get it here:
Ok are you ready? Here we go:
Provides an Automated View of All Your Money and Assets
Mint was one the first money management apps out there and it is still great. It does a lot of things, but the best thing about it for most people is the ability to see your entire financial picture. I was using it years ago before it was even sold to Intuit and still continue to this day.
You can connect most all banks, credit unions, lenders, credit card companies, investment companies, etc. Once they're connected it keeps them all up to date. You can even add your assets like your home and your car and it will continuously pull the latest values from Zillow and Kelly Blue Book to give you an accurate picture of what they are worth.
Once you've added all of your accounts, assets, debts, and investments you get an awesome up to date picture of all of your finances! It will even calculate your net worth for you.
I've used it for years and still enjoy being able to get a quick snapshot of my entire financial picture along with a real time view of my current net worth making it a must have tool in my arsenal for a total money picture.
- Gives you a complete picture of all your financial accounts in near real time
- Calculates your net worth for you automatically
- Gives you insight into your transactions
Mint was one of the first personal finance apps to really move us away from the old Quicken and Microsoft Money days and is still one of the best personal finance apps out there. It's not perfect. Updates have slowed down and the interface can be cluttered, but just being able to see all of your accounts and one spot and automatically updated is a must have feature for everyone.
Your Banks Online Banking & Bill Pay
Automated Bill Payments
I've looked for an alternative, but to this day I'm still using my credit unions own Online Banking and Bill Pay System to pay bills. Pretty much all the banks or credit unions should have this feature by now. If yours doesn't, it may be time to switch to a new one.
I've been using Online Bill Pay to automatically pay my bills on a reoccurring schedule and it is amazing! I literally do almost nothing with my bills, they are taken care of automatically. No late fees or forgotten bills.
The interface isn't great but it really doesn't matter because once I setup a bill it is all automatic. I just let it handle the rest!
This has been one of my greatest time savers as I've looked for ways to automate my life. If you do nothing else on this list, automate your bills! It will save you a ton of time and eliminate a lot of hassles out of your life.
- Easy to setup
- Makes life so much easier
- No more late fees or forgotten bills
I've yet to find a dedicated solution better than a bank or credit unions solution, but as soon as someone creates one I'll be testing it out! For now, I'll stick to Online Bill Pay from my credit union.
View All of Your Debt and Build a Plan to Eliminate It
Unfortunately, most people are in debt and Ready for Zero is one of the best apps out there to help you get out of debt.
Ready for Zero connects all you debts in one app and then provides you with a complete picture of what you owe on each, the total amount, when they are due, the APR, and so on. If you are in debt get this app now!
I explain step by step how I used ReadyforZero to get rid of my debt in my free 5 day email course.
Not only does it provide an up to date view of all of your debt but it also helps you to create a plan to get out of debt. If a refinance makes sense you can even begin that process right from the app.
- The best overall debt management tool I've found
- Clean interface and simple to use
- Great planning features
ReadyforZero is the go to app for getting out of debt. I haven't found anything better.
Automated Budget and Money Tracker
Level money is a great tool for keeping a simple and automated budget. It differs from other budgeting apps in that it automatically budgets for you based on a plan you create and your financial transactions. It simplifies it down to a monthly, weekly, and daily number you can use to find out how much you can safely spend without going over budget.
Level doesn't allow for detailed budgeting like in a app such as You Need a Budget, but if you want to automate your budget and keep a daily check I haven't found anything more simple than Level.
- Simple, clean, and easy to use interface
- Pretty much all automated once you create the plan
- Best budgeting app for a beginner
If you're new to budgeting or want a simple and automated setup this is the way to go. Once you create your plan and get started it basically works for you. Great budgeting app!
If you haven't begun to build some savings for a rainy day or even invest Digit is a great place to start. If you're not quite ready for the stock market or if you are new to savings or investing it doesn't get much simpler than Digit.
Digit takes out a small amount from your checking account 2 or 3 times a week and places it into a savings account. It's designed to be all automated and you shouldn't even notice the money is missing.
When it's time to pull out that savings for an emergency or big purchase you were saving for there are no fees and the transfer can be easily initiated from the app.
- All automated, you download the app and run through the setup and you are ready to go
- Great and easy way for a beginner saver to get started
Great beginner savings app. If you have no savings or investments you need to get started now and Digit is a great starter tool to do just that.
If you're ready to take the next step and jump into the stock market, Acorns is great beginner app to do just that. While Digit is great if you just want to save, Acorns is a awesome way to get started in the stock market without jumping into full fledged stock picking.
Best of all, Acorns is all automated! Similar to how Digit works, Acorns will automatically withdrawal from you account but they do it a little differently.
Say for example, you buy a Starbucks latte for $4.50, Acorns will round up to $5.00 and take that .50 and put it into your investment account! They basically take your spare change and invest it for you. Believe it or not it can add up over time and you won't even notice it's coming out of your account.
It also invests your money for you from a choice of 5 different funds ranging from conservative to aggressive so you're covered no matter what skill level investor you are.
In addition to the spare change investing they also allow you to setup automatic withdrawals from your bank account for more automated investing options.
- Automated investing from spare change
- 5 funds to choose from for every risk level
- Automated withdrawals from your bank account available as well at any time
If you're not investing now and are not ready for investing in individual stocks I would get Acorns right now. It's too cool!
Great beginner investing tool and the fee's are not bad at all. Just the value of beginning to invest today far outweighs the $1 per month fee.
The choice of 5 funds make choosing you're investment easy for beginners to determine what they are comfortable with.
Free Stock Trading
This is my favorite app on the list. I started investing a while back in the early 2000s and I've seen some seriously terrible user interfaces and ridiculous fees. Robinhood came out not to long ago and totally changed stock marketing investing for the better.
Back in the old days :) we had to call or sign into a terrible website and pay $10 per trade and sometimes more...
I'm so glad those days are over!
Fast forward to today and I have an automated withdrawal every 2 weeks from my bank into Robinhood. Not only that, but I don't even have to wait! As soon as the transfer is initiated my funds are available in Robinhood to trade!
I get an alert on my iphone that my funds are available to trade. I log in and buy some stock in a company I have on my watchlist and boom! Within a couple seconds my fund is automatically deposited and I've bought the stock.
Best of all there are no fees! What more could you ask for?
- Fast and automated deposits into Robinhood
- Clean and visually appealing app interface
- Fee free stocking investing
Robinhood is the best place to start individual stock investing. No fees and a great interface make it a no brainer choice! Unless you need some seriously advanced stock market tools Robinhood is your best bet.
With these seven apps you can completely automate your money and give yourself more time to focus on what you love and enjoy in life! Get started today and begin automating your money!
